Looking Ahead for a Similar Experience

Good Luck!
Dear UNC-A faculty and student Greece travellers,

Hello. I am a middle-age person in the Raleigh area that recently found his life's passion: an academic study of history. A couple of years ago, I enrolled at my local community college with the immediate goal of earning an Associate in Arts degree. Most of the credits will transfer to NCSU. There, I plan to pursue a BA in history.

While reading a Western Civ I survey of ancient Greece, I fell in love (so to speak) with its unparalled heritage. Thus, another goal of mine became to travel to Greece to personally experience and absorb the atmosphere of an ancient culture that most people only dream about. To read about it in books and watch The History Channel is one avenue, but to have the "hands on" experience of actively studying segments of the culture on site can be an experience never to be forgotten. Part of that result is I can actually visualize offering a 20-30 minute presentation of one of the better-known personalities of Greek antiquity on-site.

The reason I am writing to you is I have done online searches of study abroad programs in Greece, and to my pleasant surprise, the best one in my view is offered just a few hours down I-40 from here. Hurray for UNC-Asheville!! There are many more sites on your iterinary than other programs I've looked at. You don't appear to get bogged down at a single locale. You offer some "free days" for students to catch up, get personal stuff done, and to enjoy some sites without a regimented time frame, or maybe just to relax.

It might be 10 years of so, but, again, a major life goal is to study abroad in Greece with a major university. I am looking forward to reading your experiences, good and not quite as good stuff. Your experiences will be a part the basis I am looking ahead to. Best of luck to you!!

How exciting that you came across our blog and might be interested in participating with us next year. In the meantime, you might also be interested in our Classics department homepage - www.unca.edu/classics, which will give you a good idea of classical activity at - dare I say it - one of the best departments in NC. Not that I am biassed in any way and send best regards from me, Sophie Mills, Professor and Chair of the Classics department, UNCA.
